Review of New Super Lucky's Tale (PC, Xbox One X/S, PS4)

Hey, everyone this week I review Playful's newest platformer. Ids this game Lucky enough to become top dog... Or in this case... Top Fox? Let's find out!

(best enjoyed with headphones on!)

Before the actual review starts, a quick injury update! Well, guys. I am feeling a lot more comfortable last week, due to the new cast, which is now replaced on my fractured forearm. I'm experiencing a lot less pain, due to its lightweight design, however, it turned out that I am also fractured my wrist. So, I am still on the mend for quite a while, it is anticipated that the bones would take around 5 to 11 weeks to completely heal.

However, the is always a risk of the fractured bones may fall out of place. Due to my epilepsy, they have decided not to operate on it. To be fair, I have been more than enough surgery for one lifetime! Anyway, back to the review!

The 3-D platformer genre is a stable of the gaming industry today. The genre started back in the mid to late 90s, when the Nintendo 64 hit the market. The consoles games catalogue is chock-a-block filled with 3D platformers with super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and conkers bad Fur Day to name a few.

Texas-based developers, Playful released the first entry of the series, originally for John Carmack's VR gaming system, the Oculus Rift, back in 2016. With the world's first truly 4K ready gaming system, the Xbox One X was released, Playful re-released the game for the Xbox, marketed as a launch title for the one X. The year after Super Lucky's Tale's release, the game got the remaster treatment, then, released for Nintendo's portable console hybrid, the Switch. During the height of lockdown, due to the coronavirus, Playful gave us a little creature comfort, as new super lucky's  Tale Was released the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

You play the part of a little fox lucky Swifttail, who embarks on a quest to help his sister, and fellow member of the Guardian Order, Lyra to restore the book of ages. After an attack on lucky's homeworld by collecting all the pages, which are scattered throughout the various levels of the game.

The access ability scores are as follows-

Visibility 9.5

First off, there are no colourblind modes available for this game, there is very little need for one. There are no colour-coded elements that will cause an issue for players with visual impairments.

Audibility 9.5

There are in-game subtitles that can be enabled and disabled via the games pause menu. This allows the function can be enabled and disabled on the fly.

However, the access ability of this game can be improved, in terms of this category would be customisable font size. Giving the player control over the site of font that is used in the menus and subtitles will allow the hearing impaired player to read them without the risk of gaining any eyestrain.

So, this game is quite easily playable for a player with a hearing impairment, however, a little work would be required  to make the game a lot more accessible.

Mobility 8

Although this game is highly playable, in terms of this category, a major flaw exists in this game. There are no additional control layouts available! Although you can customise the button layouts be the Xbox accessories app or the adaptive controller, it needs addressing nonetheless!

Gameplay 11

For a 3-D platformer, this game Sammy has a lot of character and a hell of a lot of polish!. The cell-shaded art style of the game feels completely unique when compared with other entries of the genre, for example, Banjo Kazooie. Also, playing this game makes the upgrade to the next generation of hardware worth it.

This game was one of the first games to use a clever workaround with the Xbox's backwards compatibility technology to allow developers to take full advantage of the advanced Xbox hardware. This game has also has Auto HDR support. If you own a television, or monitor compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and own an Xbox series S or X console, the graphics you will see while playing this game, will look a lot more vivid.

Also, if you have an Xbox series S or X console, the game can run at 60fps.

Each level you travel to has a total of three pages to collect. First off, obviously, completing the level, finding L-U-C-K-Y, each letter is hidden in each and every level! And collecting a grand total of 300 coins. When compared with the original Super Lucky's Tale, this game feels a lot better. Plus, this game contained all the DLC content from the original.

In conclusion, New Super Lucky's Tale is an absolute delight to play. The game is highly playable, looks great, thanks to the enhancements on Xbox series S/X, with unique features to make the game feel fresh and new. If you are looking for a relatively cheap family-friendly super Mario 64 clone to play, when you're saving money the AAA releases, for example, Back 4 Blood, or Halo Infinite, this game could be an excellent choice!
