Review of Humankind (PC)

Hey, everyone! As an extra review for you lot, I review Amplitude's attempt on the Civilisation-esque 4X strategy game subgenre. Is this game better than the originator? Or should this game with was in the pages of history?

Let's find out!

(Best enjoyed with headphones on!)

Again, before the review itself starts a quick injury update. The day after my review of super lucky's tale was posted and uploaded if You're Watching on YouTube, I went to the hospital for an x-ray.

The results of that x-ray are nothing but positive. One of the three fractures that are present on my forearm is in perfect alignment. This means that they are is a high likelihood of the fracture itself fuelling actually. Should everything go according to plan, my cast will get cut in half. Currently, the cast itself goes from just below my elbow to my wrist. Should everything go according to plan, it will become a half arm cast, when this happens, I will return to work.

I have an appointment two weeks on Monday, it will be then be decided whether or not it is plausible for the cash to become half. With that aside, back to the review!

The civilisation series has been the grandfather of the strategy game genre, the first entry of the series was released in 1991. To this day Civilisation is still one of the most recognisable franchises of the strategy game genre.

As with everything in the gaming industry, when one idea or Giga trend is successful, copycats will follow. In Hearthstone's case, Artefact, and Runeterra, I could go on and on about this, but, I would simply prefer not to.

Amplitude Studios is the creator of such Civilisation copycats, for example, Endless Legend, released in 2014. When Sega acquired the developers, along with highly successful tabletop games producer, Games Workshop, Company of Heroes,  developer, Relic Entertainment, Amplitude develop this game to directly challenge the originator, civilisation VI

You start from humble beginnings, a nomadic tribe, exploring the world, during the ancient era, to a massive, highly technologically advanced empire, in the contemporary era. you manage cities and armies conduct diplomacy with your neighbours, conduct research,, and advance through the ages.

The accessibility scores are as follows

Visibility 8.5

Let's kick things off with the negatives, this game has no colourblind modes and its accessibility section of the menu. However, in single-player mode, the colour of your rivals can be completely customised. So, you can tailor the colour scheme to suit your impairments. So a visually impaired player should be able to play this game with no issues, but colourblind modes or filters should be the standard of the industry as a whole!

Audibility 10.5

There are in-game subtitles that are activated by default. These subtitles are present when you are negotiating with a fellow civilisation, or, when narration happens during certain events, for example, when the civilisation advances in technological era. So a hearing-impaired player should be able to play this game with no issues.

Mobility 9

As par for the course from most 4X strategy games on PC, the game was primarily controlled by the mouse, with clicks selects armies and cities, right-click gives move and attack orders. So, if you played a strategy game before on PC, the should be familiar to you.

However, controller support would make this game a little more accessible. Giving players with mobility impairments a choice on which input method they would like to use allows certain users to play this game a lot easier, after all, according to  Gamasutra last year, controller use on steam has more than doubled since 2018. Ensemble Studios'Halo wars have shown us that RTS can on a controller is a thing, and civilisation VI has already been ported to consoles in my opinion, brilliantly

So, a player with a mobility impairment should be able to play this game with no issues, but controller support could potentially make this game better.

Gameplay 11

Take note, Firaxis! This is the future of 4X strategy games!

The entire map is divided into territories building an outpost, which can be involved in the city allows your culture to claim that territory. This makes games even more interesting, as the early game is transformed into a frantic land grab, as the other civilisations frantically scramble for the vacant territories which can give you an advantage. Also, the diplomacy system is completely reworked. Other civilisations can sign treaties with you, for example, sharing map information, trade agreements, nonaggression pacts, even alliances.

A rival culture's attitude towards you is updated dynamically. For example, civilisation will be more hostile to you, should you move troops into their territory, good relations with that civilisation can lead to alliances and friendships being formed, on the other hand, hostile relations with that civilisation can lead to other civilisations soaring spanners in the works, even declaring war with you!

In this game, there is so much to manage, like food supply going towards each city, diplomatic relations with other cultures, and army management, which is vital for your civilisation's survival in case some wiseguy, who wants to take a territorial from you, even wipe your civilisation from the map completely declares war on you.

In summary, Humankind feels like a massive improvement from your bog-standard civilisation game. Each and every time your culture advances in technological era, you can pick which civilisation you wish to adopt, with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, buffs and nerfs.

Instead of using gold to purchase a tile to expand your cities, the only way to expand your culture's influence on the world stage is to take a territory, either from a  weaker civilisation, or a liberated civilisation. This makes a game a lot more exciting, as the game, basically, gives you something to fight over. With this game being on Xbox game pass for PC, there would be criminal not to a lease give this game a try. Again, don't knock it till you tried it.

OVERALL SCORE 97.5%

See you guys in the next review!
