Review of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary(PC)

Hey everyone, this time, I review one of the most revolutionary First-Person shooter (FPS) games on console. Do this game's scores deserve that accolade?

Let's find out!

                               (best enjoyed with headphones on!)

In the late 90s, the console wars was a three-horse race- Nintendo, Sega and Sony.  In 2001 one of those three titans of the industry came crashing down.

After two successive console failures, Sega pulled out of the console race. During the failing company's fall from grace, PC Operating system manufacturer, Microsoft approached Sega to create a console to challenge Sony. The deal fell through in E3 2001 But former Sega hardware engineers went to Microsoft to create its first console, the Xbox, named after Microsoft's patented Application Programming Interface (API) Direct X.

During this time, Bungie was developing games for Mac, Myth and Marathon were examples of these games. Another example was an RTS, showcased in MacWorld in 1999. The game is called Halo: Combat Evolved. Microsoft was looking for a good launch title. in March 2000, Microsoft bought Bungie. Bungie went under the "Microsoft Game Studios" brand and Halo was transformed into a First-Person Shooter.

The game picks up shortly after the events of Halo Reach. The year is 2552, An alliance of Alien Races called the Covenant has been at war with humanity. We are losing. A vital Human military asset, the planet Reach was overwhelmed, extinction and defeat seemed certain. You play as John- 117, the last Spartan Super Soldier who finds himself aboard the UNSC Frigate, the Pillar of Autumn, which has just fled from the Fall of Reach. Unfortunately, the ship gets chased down by Covenant ships and your ship gets abandoned. You then find yourself in Installation 01. The first Halo Ring. A superweapon built by the Forerunners capable of destruction on a galactic scale. It is up to you to defeat the Covenant, and most importantly, stop the weapon from firing!

Attention on deck, Company! here come those accessibility scores!

PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS FOR THE PC PORT ON THE MASTER CHEIF COLLECTION ONLY!

Visibility 7
There is no colourblind mode. In multiplayer each and every player on your team has a marker over their heads, with the player's service tag. So if you see a player without one, smoke 'em!

On the other hand, in Multiplayer the teams are red and blue. I understand that red and green are hardest hit, but it needs addressing nonetheless!

Audibility 10
In-Game subtitles can be activated via the options menu, so you should be able to play this game with no issues.

Mobility 10.5
There are options for both mouse and keyboard and controller. If you've played Halo on Console before (who hasn't?) the controller options should be familiar to you and the amount of options available is extensive. But fully customisable controls would be awesome! The keys can be rebound and customised.

Right guys, picture this:

Tom dissed my skills on Halo, I responded by challenging him to a 1v1 on  Blood Gulch (Because Gulch is life!) Tom uses a  keyboard and mouse, and I use my trusty Xbox, One controller, to play. In a normal situation, Tom would have an advantage over me as players who use keyboard and mouse are, on average 60% more accurate due to the raw input of a mouse. Well, fear not. fellow padders! 343 has got you covered!

When controllers are used in this game, aim assist kicks in. What it does is a little  AI assist when aiming. Although it doesn't automatically aim for Tom's head.  That would make this too unbalanced but if I were to aim close enough to his body it should be a direct hit! The strength of the aim assist evens things out.

Gameplay 10
Gameplay-wise this is the best version of Halo CE for PC out there!  If you own Reach, then buy this, it works like an expansion. You get access to the CE campaign, the multiplayer with all maps for just £6.99! (or £13.98 if you are getting Reach with it) If you've never played a Halo game before and want to get into the Halo series, best to start with Reach, then get into CE.

A great little feature of this game is the ability to switch between classic and anniversary graphics at the touch of a button. For the 360's release back in 2011. This means that two versions of the game running on top of each another. This made the game too demanding for the 360's limited hardware to handle. With the Xbox One, it runs at a silky smooth 60 fps. The PC version takes things further with unlimited framerates and 4K graphics (the Xbox One version has  4K enhancements as well if you're playing on  a One X!)

In summary, Halo CE: A is probably the best way to replay the game that started it all! with the ability to switch between classic and anniversary graphics on the fly is a great feature the Classic graphics boosts the overall performance and the anniversary graphics makes you forget you are playing a game from 2001. But if you ask me, the Crowbar Collective did a better job on the remastering of the graphics of Black Mesa.

With this game being available on Xbox Game Pass  for PC (and console if you have Ultimate!) it would be worth your while giving this game a try

 OVERALL SCORE 93.75%

See you guys in the next review!

remember to stay safe, stay inside and stay alive!

With that aside, it's time for an open question! with Keyboard and mouse support coming to FPS games on console, what play style would you prefer to use? the accuracy of KB +M  or the familiarity of a controller?
