Review of Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey(Various Formats)

Hey everyone! Today I review a launch title for the original PS1. So, can Abe escape Rupture Farms with the Satoru Iata Memorial Award intact? Let's find out!

Right guys. this review is happening out of sheer coincidence (or merely the illusion of coincidence?). After a family emergency, I had to practically call off all my plans. Tired and distressed, my best buddy, Andrew "OpenRA" Carpenter seen me walking by and offered me a lift.

I basically told him what happened. He then offered me food at a local fast-food restaurant, a place to crash for a few hours, and a lift back to the house. To show my gratitude to him I decided to review this game as a mark of good will.

Originally released in 1997 for the original PlayStation, the game takes place in(As the title suggests) Oddworld, the Glukkons owners of the Rupture Farms meat processing factory has enslaved the Mudokons. Abe, a floor-sweeper made a startling discovery- Rupture Farms are introducing a new product. Unfortunately... It was made of Mudokon meat! It's up to our unlikely hero, Abe to sneak through Rupture Farms, sneaking past the Slig guards, and escorting fellow Mudokons to safety and freedom!

The accessibility scores are as follows:
VERSIONS TESTED- original (PSX, available on GOG)  and the "New N Tasty remaster on a base model  Xbox One
 Visibility 10
There are no colour coded elements in this game, so you'll be A-OK with this game.

audibility 8
Although there are subtitles in the cutscenes. but with the escape/stealth style of games, your ears are your best ally. If a Slig is off-screen and is heading towards you, you won't be able to know this if you are hearing impaired.

Mobility 9
In the PC version, you can rebind the keys to suit your impairments, there is also controller support, so you can connect your Xbox 360, or Xbox One controller and play normally. The button layout can be customised to suit your taste.  But the button prompts on the opening levels can be confusing.

On the New N Tasty remaster the button prompts are pretty straightforward. But the button layouts can't be customized. On the other hand, you can activate auto-run which pretty much does what it says in the tin. If you move Abe, he will run automatically, so you should only have the sneak button to allow you well... sneak past the Sligs without alerting them . With the Xbox accessories app, you can pick which button allows you to sneak.

Gameplay 10
The most accurate way to describe this game is a family friendly escape/stealth game. You can also activate co-op mode in the New N Tasty Remaster.
Co-op mode basically passes the controller style co-op. One player plays first when poor Abe dies, the second player takes control. This creates a fun, social experience with a friend (in my case my best bud who I knew when we were in Primary School!). With multiple endings, which are entirely dependent on whether or not you save your fellow Mudokons or lead them to their death, there's a lot of lifespan to keep you playing.

In summary Oddworld: Abe's Oddyse is a classic to give your nostalgia fix,  You can buy this game pretty cheap on Steam-£2! (Sorry Andy, won't run on Apple Macs)

you tell 'em Boromir!
So if you are looking for a game to play, but saving up for Christmas, this game is a very good purchase.

OVERALL SCORE 92.5%

See you guys in the next review
