Review of Sonic Heroes(Various formats)

Hey, everyone! As an extra review this week, I review  Sonic's debut on PS2, does Sonic have what it takes to race ahead of its competition, and climb to the top of the summer of game pass leaderboard? Or should Sonic slow down a little?

Let's find out!

(Best enjoyed with headphones on!)

Right, guys! The original plan was to review Return of the King, as part of Lord of the rings week, but, today, England began their Euro 2020 qualification campaIgn today. The first team they faced Croatia, the team that knocked them out on the World Cup semi-final, back in 2018.

Obviously, Gareth Southgate's boys were back for revenge. Obviously, OLDGAMES, and I, "fancied a flutter on the footie". If England were to win, I would be forced to post a review of either Black and White or this classic title. When the final whistle blew in Wembley Stadium, the English beat the Croats 1-0

Seriously, Croatia you had one job! Just one!

With all of this aside, on with this review!

Originally released for the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox in 2003, the game is set in  Moebius and follows the viewpoints of three teams.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles- Team Sonic has received a letter from their arch-nemesis Dr Eggman, which claims that he has developed the ultimate weapon, and threatens to conquer the world in three days.

Espio, Vector, and Charmy- Team Chaotix, who receives a mission from an unknown employer, hiring their detective services, for an agreed sum.

Shadow, Rouge and Omega- Team Dark embarks on a quest to find Dr Eggman to discover Shadow's true identity, and for Rouge to steal Eggmanb's hidden treasure,

And finally, Amy Rose, Big, and Cream- Team Rose, who are looking for Chocola, the Chao, Froggy, and of course Amy's crush, Sonic.

The accessibility scores are as follows-

Visibility 9.5

Although there is no colourblind mode, there is very little need for one. The only colour-coded elements that exist in the game is the team's formations. Speed, fly, and power (more on that in a minute). Red for power formation, blue for speed, and yellow for fly. However, the characters portraits and the icons should give you an idea of which formation is recommended, or you have selected at any given time during the game.

So, a player with a visual impairment should be able to play this game with no issues.

Audibility 10

There are in-game subtitles that are enabled by default. These subtitles are present in both cut scenes, and on missions. So, a player with a hearing impairment should be able to play this game with no issues.

Mobility 11

The PC version, which was used to test the game keyboard controls can be customised via the options menu in the game's launcher. Seeing as it is a sonic game, this is not recommended.

However, there is controller support available. An Xbox One controller works like a charm. Better still, the controls can be rebound to suit your impairments, even when you're playing with the controller.

Matter of fact, for the ultimate nostalgic, console experience, playing with the controller is the best way to play this game. So, a player with a mobility impairment should be able to play this game with no issues.

Gameplay 11

This game is my childhood, right there! I remember playing this game on my Nintendo GameCube when it was released back in 2003. Thanks to OLDGAMES, I can relive this classic, for a sonic game, this is exactly what a sonic game should play like.

Yes, I understand that it's not 2-D. But, this game still has a lot of polish. What makes this game stand out from any entries of the series is the game's teamwork mechanic. In a standard sonic game, you play as a single character. Not in this game.

Instead, you play as a team of three, each character is given a unique role or "Formation". These are power, fly, and speed, which can be changed on-the-fly. Power formation allows the team to break through rocks, and various obstacles that get in their way, they can also take down enemies and a single hit flying formation, is self-explanatory. The character fly up high ledges, and various other obstacles. Fly formation allows the team to use thunder shoot attack. This attack is particularly useful for flying enemies, as they are, quite literally, shot out of the sky.

Last, but certainly not least, speed formation, as the name suggests, allows the player to travel at high speeds. This is particularly useful when navigating through the levels also when in speed formation, the team can homing attack from one enemy to another to gain access to areas separated by gaps. The amount of levels available is fairly decent, for 2003 standards. Also, there are two-player modes thrown into the mix.

In summary, Sonic Heroes is probably one of the best platformer games of the 2000s. The ability to play as a team of three, instead of playing as a single character is a breath of fresh air, as it makes the game completely unique from every entry of the series.

Also, it doesn't require a lot of horsepower in your  PC to run this game. Hell, even a laptop game this game at 60fps, in my honest opinion, this game is an all-time classic to the sonic series. If you are looking for a game to get your sonic fix over the summer, in preparation for Colours Ultimate, releasing in September, this game is highly recommended!

OVERALL SCORE 103.75%

And sonic dethrones Lord of the Rings Conquest, and rises to the top of the summer of game pass rankings!

See you guys in the next review!
