Review of Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition(PC)

Hey everyone! Today I review the third entry one biggest franchises of the RTS sub-genre

Is all the criticism of this game is justified, or is it just resistance to change?

Let's find out!

This is the last remaster before AoE4! Through the past two years remasters of the old AoE games has been releasing from Microsoft.  This particular entry was originally released in 2005. The game is centred around the European colonisation of America to Washington declaring independence. This remaster includes the Warcheifs and the Asian Dynasties expansions.

The Warcheifs centres around the native American tribes in both North and South America. The Asian dynasties focus around what was going on in the |Far East like the Japanese Civil War apptly named "戦国時代"" commonly known as "The Age of the Country at War" when the various warlords were fighting among themselves for the Shogunate.

The accessibility scores are as follows:

Visibility 11

You can customise each and every player's colour. This level of customisation is showing us what an accessible RTS game is.  You can also enable narrators in chat messages and menus. So a visually Impaired player can play this game with no issues whatsoever. That, my friends, is how it's done!

Audibility 10.5

This game has in-game subtitles, so you can understand what's going on as the story progresses.

Mobility 10

Like all games in the franchise, the game is completely controlled by the mouse. As par for the course, for the more competitive RTS player, you can use hotkeys. These hotkeys can be rebound to suit your impairment. This can be played by a player with a mobility impairment quite easily.

Gameplay 10

The third entry of the franchise takes up the more streamlined-style. Like previous entries,  mATCHES of AoE 1& 2 takes a few hours to complete. This is done by removing the logistics element. In previous entries of the series, you can build certain structures which give villagers less distance from the resource site to the nearest drop-off point. In this game, any resource unit your settlers gather gets added to the inventory instantly, allowing for quick expansion of your territory. Also every so often, you can send shipments from the home city. These can vary from additional resources settlers, additional soldiers, even the mighty fortress wagon! This allows the action on the map to start sooner, which in turn increases the pace of the game.

The Definitive Edition adds two new civilizations, the Swedes and the Incas. With a  host of balance fixes to boot. This version of the game no longer gives the imbalance when it comes to the home city system.

Instead of having a system that gives the person who has better cards in their home city. Each player has to pick a premade deck of shipments. So it is up to skill and mastery of your chosen civilizations that will carry you to victory!

In summary, Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition is a very solid RTS game it's unique, pacy style of gameplay eases the biggest criticism of the franchise- A match takes too damn long!  which is, in my opinion, a big factor of |StarCraft's success in the competitive e-sports scene. With seven campaigns to play through this game has a tonne of lifespan, there is also a skirmish mode to practise your strategies to prepare you for the multiplayer element.

With this game being ion game pass for PC, it would be pretty much, criminal not to at least give this game a try. You'll love it!

OVERALL SCORE- 103.75%
