Review of Mass Effect(PC, 360/BC, PS3)

 Hey, everyone! This time I review one of the Xbox 360 generation's most influential WRPGs. Does this game deserve this accolade?

Let's find out!

(best enjoyed with headphones on!)

Right, first things first this game is not eligible to win any awards this year as it won the Fulgore Award on the 2015 Disabled Gaming Reviews Awards. Now, for something a bit more heartfelt. The reason why I'm redoing this review in the first place is because of my favourite gaming cafes, if I were to happen to be visiting Glasgow, R-CADE has given this channel some publicity and exposure (in a good way though!). Now, allow me to say a few things. Everybody knows that the best way to review a game from yesteryear is to test this game on actual authentic hardware.

Most of these reviews were, indeed posted in MegaBytes (before it closed) when that happened, the much needed escapism from the stresses and strains of both college and university disappeared.

When I discovered this little gem that escapism came back! So, if it wasn't for me discovering you guys, I probably would've never have coped during my honours year.

During the tweet and Facebook post giving us the shout out I have just mentioned we were described as "so invaluable to gamers with disabilities", and "a pleasure to have in R-CADE" well, please allow us to respond to this.

Certain people in the community asks us this question – why do we take time to do these reviews in the first place? Well, let's talk  a bit more about that. I don't do these reviews for profit, or attention or anything.

We do these reviews for the feelgood factor of knowing these reviews that were doing is making a positive difference as we guide people people with visual, mobility and hearing impairments on what games are suitable and playable regardless of their impairments!

Can I ask the  community to go give 'em some love!

Now, shortly after I told certain people in the community that the blog update concerning the merger between Xbox Game Pass, and EA play was uploaded to YouTube, they asked whether or not we are stopping reviews. Well, the more appropriate question to ask is "as James still breathing?" If the answer is "yes" then reviews will continue!

Our commitment to you guys is lifelong. I have used my first-hand experience of living and playing video games with a variety of disabilities into something more positive.I seriously cannot have done this without the support for you guys.

Throughout the following years after this blog's creation, back in 2013 the support from you guys in terms of which games you want to be reviewed, and most importantly emotional support through both the good times, and the bad.You know who you are, and I seriously cannot thank you enough!

That aside, with this review!

As I have said in the introduction of this review the Mass Effect series is the Most influential series of the (WRPG Sub-genre. The series has been regarded as an all-time classic of the Xbox 360 generation of hardware. According to rumours, [insert DGR  statement about rumors]That the entire trilogy is currently being remastered for the Xbox Series X and PS5.

The first entry of the series was released in 2007, as a system exclusive for the Xbox 360. The game is set in the year the year 2183.

Humankind has been able to use a way of FTL  (faster than light) travel around our very own Milky Way galaxy. This is made possible due to the network of devices called "Mass Relays" when this is discovered humanity becomes a part of a governing body of the various races that are in the Milky Way, called the Citadel Council.

Thus a massive galactic community is formed. You play the part of Cmdr Shepard. Your first mission to uncover remnants of ancient technology went sour. Then the Citadel, even life is directly threatened due to I highly advanced machine race is known as the reapers. It is up to you to track down a rogue agent who is colluding with the reapers, and protect life as we know it!

The accessibility scores are as follows –

Visibility 9.5

In combat your shield bars are in light blue, this bar goes blank as your characters take more damage during a firefight. Health borrowers are in red. This bar shrinks as your characters take more damage. This contrast does not present any major issues for a colorblind player, but   a high  contrast colour scheme would make this game more accessible for visually impaired player. Also, in conversation choices (more on than a minute) the responses has the exact same colour contrast. Light blue for paragon, dark red for renegade. As you can tell, this area of the game could also be made more accessible for a colourblind person would be changeable colourblind modes.

Audibility 10

There are in subtitles which are available via the options menu. So a player with a hearing impairment can play this game very easily.

Mobility 7

This is where the major criticisms of this game lies. In the console version, there is no legacy sick layout available. Now, Knights of the Old Republic has a perfectly working movement system that is accessible for mobility impaired players. Seriously, Bioware, why fix what ain't broke!?

The PC version, on the other hand is  more accessible version to amobility impaired player. The controls can be completely customize view the games options menu. So, you will be able to tailor the game's control schemes to suit your impairments. In that retrospect, it's best to go for the PC version. At least you'll be able to play the  game!

Console=2/5

PC=5/5

Gameplay 11

This game has a load of replay value, as the game's story is dictated by the choices you make in the game. Some of which, affects the situation should you decide to progress to the next entries of the series.

This is an excellent excuse to replay the game as multiple play throughs are required to completely explore the game. The story is very engaging, and the characters are memorable. With this game clocking in at an average of 15 – 20 hours, if you are concentrating solely on the main story. If you decide to complete all the side quests, this game can be completed in 50 – 60 hours .

The customisation options of this game is extensive. When you start the game, you will have to build a profile of your character. When this is going on, you can select various traits that brings benefits to your character. For example, if your character is a war hero, the paragon stat that is added to certain actions is doubled. So, if you are going through a paragon run, it is vital for your character to have that particular trait.In summary, mass effect is one of the best WRPGs of the Xbox 360s generation. With the ability to import your character to Mass effect 2 makes your playthrough of the entire series (excluding Andromeda) more interconnected as the choices you make in this game ripples into the other three games of the classic trilogy. This game is included in the EA play catalogue. So, if you are a fan of RPGs and is looking for a game to play in the run-up to the festive season, with presents to buy, food for Christmas dinner, decorations for the house and whatnot this game is highly recommended.

For PC players, this games system requirements is very low, for goodness sake, it's an Xbox 360 game are talking about here! Also, it was built using unreal engine 3, which is very mid to low spec friendly. So no excuses, soldier! If your PC can run MCC, you can run Mass Effect

OVERALL SCORE 91.25%

See you guys in the next review!
