Review of Warcraft 3: Reforged(PC)

Hey everyone! Today I review a remaster of one of the games of my childhood. does this game live up the praise this game received?

Let's find out!

(best enjoyed with headphones on!)

I was saving this until August 2019, but the launch came in later than I predicted. By a fair margin. With this game being released today, I thought now would never be a better time to do so.

Blizzard Entertainment was the behemoth of the RTS genre in the mid-to-late 90s, with timeless classics such as StarCraft, and Diablo 2  which is still being played competitively and is still active (particularly in Korea!) even with its predecessor, StarCraft 2 being on the market.  the WarCraft series is StarCraft's brainchild. StarCraft is basically, WarCraft with a Sci-Fi setting(Devs of that actually said that in an interview! Not kidding!)

In 1999, Blizzard's online service, Battle.net was introduced with its Battle.net edition launched. It contained its Tides of Darkness expansion. In the summer of 2002,  the WarCraft series received a full-blown sequel, WarCraft 3: Reign of Chaos was released. One year later, it's expansion, Frozen Throne got released. Yesterday. This game got the remaster treatment.

This game is set before World of WarCraft. The Orcs and humans are at war. The Blackrock Clan has completed a ritual to bring an unstoppable force to Azeroth- The Undead! (we interrupt this WarCraft 3 review to bring you House of the Dead *DING*). It is up to Arthas, Prince of Lorderon to expel this evil!

The accessibility scores are as follows:

Visibility 7
There is no colourblind mode but in custom games, you can set your faction's colour. But in the campaign, you can't. This is disappointing concerning Blizzard's track record. StarCraft 2, Overwatch and World of Warcraft has colourblind modes in their options menus. Why not this game!?

Audibility 10.5
There are in-game subtitles which are present in missions and cutscenes in the campaign. But in Multiplayer notifications, like when your base comes under attack on-screen notifications would be nice, like in Petroglyph's 8-Bit series would be better. Blizzard's strategy games are highly competitive environments, so keeping up-to-date with what's going on in a match can be the difference between victory and defeat.

Mobility 10
as par for the course, the game is controlled using the mouse. if you've played an RTS before, this should be no stranger to you.  There are hotkeys which can be used and customised. So you should be alright with this game.

Gameplay 8
As I said, WarCraft 3 is the game of my childhood. I remember playing this game during my stay in Edinburgh (Astley Aisley) and still do, even to this day. This game is a big one, with nine campaigns to play through. You'll be playing this game for months. You'll come for the campaigns, but you'll stay for the Multiplayer. There are Custom games to play against the A.I, go on ranked matchmaking to conquer the world.

With four factions (Humans, Orc, Night Elves, and the Undead) to choose from with their own heroes,  units and buildings, so every faction feels like you're playing an entirely different game.

What's new in this remaster... Wellll... Apart from a few graphical upgrades... Not a lot! Yes, it has the Frozen Throne Expansion included. But with most remasters, they have extra content like additional maps or extra single-player content to make it worth the extra expense. In this case, if you own the classic WarCraft 3 games, you're not missing much apart from matchmaking.

In summary, WarCraft 3 Reforged is a good strategy game, the amount of content in this is massive, but the lack of extra content might not be worth buying if you own the original and Frozen throne already. This game is a masterpiece of an RTS, Blizzard's flair in storytelling is showing in this game. If it's a rich, highly competitive Lord of the Rings-style RTS you're looking for. This is your game!

OVERALL SCORE 88.8%
