Review of Spyro Reignited(Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Hey everyone! This time I take you guys back to the 90s for some old-school platforming.

Can this game achieve a decent score?

Let's find out!

The year is 1998. Pop sensation Britney Spears took the music charts by storm. The scandal between U.S President, Bill Clinton began and Monica Lewinsky began to surface. European currencies were restructured into a single Europe-wide currency, the Euro. We found a different use for Ford Anglais as the second Harry Potter Book, the Chamber of Secrets hit the shops and this game was released for the Sony PlayStation.

In this game, Gnasty Gnorc has invaded the Dragon Kingdom and turned every dragon into crystallized statues. You play as Spyro, a young dragon who has to travel to the various areas in the Dragon Kingdom and set things right.

The  Accessibility scores are as follows.

Visibility 2
Your trusty dragonfly Sparx's color determines how many hits Spyro can take. Two of which are green and red. So, you'll find it hard to determine how healthy Spyro is, and there is no colorblind mode in the remaster to fall back to. So major issues here that need addressing.

Audibility 6
There are in-game subtitles are present in the remaster, so you'll be OK with this game. But, at certain points, you'll be reliant audio cues to decipher where to go, for example when you are chasing the  Jewel thief who is taunting you

Mobility 9.5
The controls are simple enough. There is a way to activate a legacy-style layout. When you set the camera to "Active", the camera will follow Spyro as he moves and turns. But when the camera is set to "Passice" the controls would change drastically. The scheme would be the same as when a weapon is drawn in Red Dead Redemption 2. If this were to be an option.  The scores would've been the opposite.

There is Keyboard support there, but this game is best played with a controller connected. So you should be fine with this game.

Gameplay 9
With three games to play though, there would be plenty of lifespan here. The game uses Epic Games' de facto development tool, Unreal Engine. so the game is not too taxing in terms of requirements, which is more than ideal for the Switch port.

But, you do the same thing over and over in all 3 games. So the game can get repetitive after a while. You enter the level, save the dragons, listen to a little dialogue, return to the hub world. If this were to be a true "remake" surely, at least some extra content, like Stormy Ascent and Future Tense in Crash Bandicoot NSane's case would be implemented. So, is it worth the £34.99 price tag? I'd say not.

If you are looking for a game to relive those childhood memories playing the originals on your PS1, you're in the right place. The first game I played on the PS1 I had for my Christmas was the demo for the original Spyro.  It felt good to replay the Artisans hub word and Town Square levels on my new Ryzen-powered PC.

In summary, Spyro Reignited's main selling point, like all remasters is Nostalgia. This game has plenty of it. The game's use of Unreal Engine is put to good use, as this game is well optimized.

On the other hand, you'll get three Spyro games and nothing else. As I said in the review, if you're playing  34.99 you'd expect a little extra content in the game. After all Shenmue 1 &2 is £24,99, and Onimusha is £14,99. So I'd wait until it does down in price, or get it on Humble Bundle.

OVERALL SCORE 44%

See you guys in the next review

Due to the upgrades, no narrations as the Hard Drive was scrapped. Narrations should start back next week. Sorry guys!
