REVIEW OF STAR WARS: EMPIRE AT WAR
earlier on this month PETROGYPH GAMES released a patch bringing back online play, this one again brings back intense battles between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, so Jedi Master Tom "Summoner's Rift" Starkey uses a Jedi mind trick to convince SpartanCommander1990 to review this game.
So is the force with Petroglyh a second time? or has this Darth Sideous enslaved their mind?
Let's find out!
Now there are very few decent Star Wars RTS games out there. Galactic Battlegrounds is one of these, but it lacks the originality of this game. This game takes place in the episodes IV, V and VI (A new Hope, the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi).
This game put you in command of the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire and the Zann Consortium (if you own the forces of corruption expansion pack, the digital versions on Steam or GOG.com contains the Forces of Corruption expansion pack. You then play through the campaigns (rebels, Empire or Consortium) or jump into the Galactic Conquest campaign and conquer the Star Wars galaxy planet by planet!
The accessibility scores are as follows –
Visibility 8
although you can change faction colors during skirmish and multiplayer battles but, you cannot do that when playing through campaign or galactic conquest modes. So, morning work needs to be done on providing a fully fledged colorblind mode
Audibility 6
although, there are in game subtitles available in the game during campaigns, but during battles on-screen notifications should be displayable at the top of the screen, and the exact same way that petroglyph has done with 8-bit Armies. So again, a little more work should be done on the accessibility front and then, and only then, a Jedi will you be
(We interrupt this Star Wars Empire at War review to bring you Yoda's speech from the Empire Strikes Back *ding*)
Mobility 9
the game can be controlled through the mouse and UI or hotkeys on the keyboard (hotkeys are now more or less par for the course in most RTS games) but, to access such shortcuts to keys must be pressed simultaneously. This can be a very small issue to players with mobility impairments. But, the majority of commands can be handled using the mouse
Gameplay 10
the mum out of single player content is extensive. You can play through the single player campaigns, with the inclusion of the Consortium campaign, the game has even more lifespan. On top of that, the sandbox galactic conquest campaign adds even more single player content to the game. On top of that, as I said in the introduction that to this review petroglyph has added a patch that re-enables online play be the steam servers. This revives Empire at War's multiplayer which has been dead since the shutdown of GameSpy. Better still, it doesn't require a high spec PC to run it, very laptop friendly this game is! If you are interested in to the RTS genre and you're looking for a cheap RTS game to test your wit against. A good choice, this game is!
OVERALL SCORE 82.5%
See guys in the next review!
