Review of Fallout London (PC)

What's up, everyone!. This time, we are breaking our retro gaming takeover, but, with good reason!

This time, I review the fastest redeemed title in GOG's history. Was this game worth the wait? Or should it be left in the nuclear wasteland?

Let's find out!

The Fallout series is one of the most recognisable franchises in gaming in general. The series's heritage dates back to the mid-90s. The first game in a series, fallout: a postnuclear role-playing game was released exclusively for the PC by Interplay Entertainment in 1997.

The success of the original game spawned sequels and various spin-offs. Fast forward to 2008, when the Fallout series we know and love started as Fallout 3, developed by Bethesda was released for PC and various consoles.

The reception of this title was nothing more than astronomical. It outsold the previous two entries of the series combined within its first week of release. The ultimate edition of Fallout 3, which included all expansions won the game of the year 2009. The final stop of this tour is Fallout 4, released to the public in 2015.

One of the biggest attractions of PC gaming in general is modding. The ability to take a version of the game made by the developers, and change certain aspects, or create new elements which allow people to create a version of that game which is truly their own.

The console players, this is not exactly new. Other titles made by Bethesda have support for mods. This title in particular is a modification for Fallout 4 and is set in the year 2237. A nuclear war between America and China has purged the world into a wasteland.

You play as the Wayfarer
You have been abducted and experimented on by the corrupt government of London, The Gentry. The recent nuclear attack on London has transformed the city (or, what's left of it!) Into a wasteland, which is contested by various factions.

It is up to you to pledge allegiance to the various factions and take down the Gentry.

The accessibility scores are as follows-

Visibility 11

every element of the screen can be fully customised via the gameplay section of the options menu. This allows a player with a visual impairment to play this game with no issues.

Audibility 10

The dialogue during the game is subtitled. A player with a hearing impairment will find no issues when playing this game. However, customisation options in terms of font size of these subtitles can be more beneficial. This option reduces the risk of a player gaining any eye strain while reading the subtitles.

Mobility 9.5

When playing with a keyboard and mouse, the controls can be fully customised to suit your impairments. Better still, there is full controller support for this game. You can enable controller support via the gameplay section of the options menu.

While using a controller, you can also customise the button layouts completely to suit your impairments. However, there is no legacy stick layout available. So, a player with mobility impairments will be tethered to play in the game using a standard keyboard and mouse.

Gameplay 11

Now, I admit it, this is my first time experiencing of Fallout game firsthand and, to be honest, the game is fantastic. Even for mod standards. The game has the exact same amount of polish as an official Fallout game made by Bethesda themselves.

It is an absolute joy to explore the city of London, completing quests and, of course, getting into a little argy-bargy. The game also has a lot of replay value as the story changes depending on which faction you pledge allegiance to.

As par for the course for a modern fallout game, the game is feverishly addictive. Seriously, this game is what kept me sane during the summer months, when I had a lot of personal issues for me to deal with. The author world element seen in a lot of modern fallout games is, in my opinion, a breath of fresh air from the linear nature of the classic games, for example, Max Payne.

I have racked up a combined total of 19 hours of playtime in this mod,  and yet, there is plenty more gameplay to be experienced also, in terms of system requirements the game relies on an older version of Fallout 4 to run so, it doesn't require a godlike GPU to run this game.

The mod doesn't require a lot of technical know-how to install, and run. If you  Fallout 4 on GOG, then, installed the base game, then redeem Fallout London (it's free!)To add the game to your GOG library, allow the installer to run its course, then enjoy the game. bish, bash, bosh.

If you own the game on Steam, the process may be a little complex. Install the game, as normal. Then, download and run the downgrade tool, located on Nexus mods

 https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/81630

then, redeem Fallout London on GOG to add that to your library, then let the installer run its course, then, every time you want to play the game, remember to launch it directly from the FOLON  launcher, which is available only on GOG.

If you want to revert the game to vanilla Fallout 4, you need to completely delete both Fallout London, and the base game, and free download Fallout 4 with a fresh install.

In summary, Fallout London feels like an official expansion to Fallout 4, done by Bethesda themselves. This mod's production started in 2019, and, by Jove, it is certainly worth the wait.

If you are a Fallout Fan and are looking for a new experience to play, or, getting into Fallout in general, I seriously cannot recommend this game enough to you!
