retrOS- Streets of Vengance(review of Streets of Rage)

Ladies and gentlemen, start your emulators! Welcome to another episode of RetrOS your dose of nostalgia by reviewing games from your childhood. This episode is a versus battle special!

This time, the 16-bit hardware generation is the battlefield. As we vet the true blue of Sega against the fighting game pedigree of Capcom, Axel Stone against Mike Haggar, Streets of rage against Final fight!

To start the proceedings, we have decided to tackle the successor to Golden Axe, which game will emerge victorious?

Let's find out!

Once again, this special series started with a dispute. After Ian "the Sharpshooter" Harvey defeated Greig "OG Loc"  Freeland, which took place just before the channel went into temporary hiatus due to my epilepsy, he started gloating.

Earlier this month, it came to a point where Greig could take no more! This time, he is after revenge, and the genre he selected is all too familiar to him,  Beat 'Em Ups. The rest, as they say, is history!

Anyway, enough setting, on with this review!

The Streets of Rage series is one of the most recognisable franchises in the beat 'em up sub-genre, The series' calibre was proven in 2020 when a collaboration of fun developers, and French publisher Dotemu released the fourth entry in this series, to worldwide acclaim with critics, and players, even today the game has a very positive rating on steam.

This particular title is the first game of the series, which was released, exclusively for the mega drive on August 2, 1991, the story itself is set in the fictional American urban metropolis of Wood Oak City. A criminal syndicate, led by Mr X has corrupted the city's local government. You play the part of three former police officers Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Adam Hunter, and it is up to you to take down the syndicate, take down Mr X, and rid the city's government of corruption.

The accessibility scores are as follows-

Visibility 9

Due to the game's age, there are no colourblind modes available in this title, however, there is very little need for one. There are no colour-coded elements that will cause an for a colourblind player.

Audibility 10

Again, due to the game's age, there is no spoken dialogue in this game. Back in those days, all dialogue was all text-based  The introduction cut scene tells the story of the game in a Star Wars crawl-style format. You will only miss the awesome soundtrack composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro.

Mobility 10

There are numerous control layouts, which can be switched at the options menu on the start screen. Even better the controls can be fully customised when you're playing this game through the Sega Mega Drive Classics collection. So, this game is highly playable for a player with a mobility impairment.

Gameplay 10

This game was built on the foundation on which Golden Axe laid. The weapon mechanics in this game is what makes this franchise stand out from the crowd in a highly congested market, at the time. There are weapons which can be picked up and used at any time during a level. However, these weapons have a limited amount of uses.

These weapons include knives, lead pipes and Samurai swords. In terms of lifespan, the game can be completed in two hours. That is double the average completion time of  Golden Axe (according to howlongtobeat) with challenging bosses to beat, including fire-breathing acrobats, knife-juggling performers, and Mr X  himself.

Seriously, if you all and even Sega Mega Drive don't own this title. You're doing it wrong!

OVERALL SCORE 97.5%

See you guys in the next review
