Review of Portal(PC, 360/BC, PS3)

Hey, everyone! Today I re-review one of the most revolutionary puzzle games of the late 200s Is this game the most accessible one of the Orange box? Or is there a lie, like the cake?

Let's find out!

(best enjoyed with headphones on!)

During the late 90s-early 2000s, valve software announced a spiritual successor to the revolutionary Half-Life series. Obviously, this game was to be launched with a new engine. The particular engine used in the title is called "Source".

Ever since his release, the source engine was the direct competitor of Epic Games' unreal engine for their accolade of the de facto game development engine.

FUN FACT: did you know that Half-Life 2 was  NOT the first game released using the source engine? It was, in fact, this second entry of the highly successful counterstrike series, Counterstrike Source.

This game in particular was another game that was based on the source engine. This game broke the barrier between the two genres of game. The first-person shooter genre, for example, half-lifeAnd puzzle games, for example,  electronic arts highly successful Bejewelled series.

(Although that the half-life series had numerous sections of each game that incorporated puzzle solving, for example, the missile silo chapter as the boss could not see you, but still has its sense of hearing intact).

This game is set in the laboratories, and test chambers of Aperture Science, founded by Cave Johnson which was, in fact, the direct competitor of the Black Mesa Science Corporation.

However, the artificial intelligence controlling Aperture's headquarters GLaDOS floods the facility with a lethal gas, killing every employee and the building.  However, one employee, saved our protagonist Chell, you find yourself in a relaxation vault in the building it is up to you, and your trusty Aperture science handheld Portal device to go through the facility's lethal test chambers to escape the facility, and bring  GLaDOS down!

The accessibility scores are as follows –

Visibility  9.5

Although the portals themselves are colour-coded (orange and blue, which are, colourblind friendly as it is) the colour of each portal has no meaning. It's quite simple, you move or fall into one portal, you will go to the exact spot where you fired your second portal.

Audibility 11

This game has both subtitles, and closed caption support.  To the  people in the community who has no idea what closed captions are, closed-captioned is, basically, the next level of subtitles. Even certain sound effects, for example, gunfire, or a turret to being alerted, will be subtitled as well. Allowing is hearing impaired player use imagination to do the rest.

So, this game is perfectly accessible from a player with a hearing impairment.

Mobility 7

In the PC version, the controls can be fully customised to suit your impairments.

But, if the console version where the difficulties lie. The button layouts can be fully customised, but no legacy stick layout is available! You know as well as I do, for a mobility impaired player playing a game on console, or on a PC, using a controller a legacy stick layout is practically a dealbreaker!

PC- 5
Console 2

Gameplay 11
once again, valve's calibre of games is showing.Unlike bog-standard  FPS games, such as the highly successful   Call of Duty series, this game tries something new, something innovative.

This takes the puzzle-solving/action elements of Half-Life 2 and turns it on its head in this game you have no weapons. The only tool that you have, and will be using is your trusty Aperture science handheld portable device a.k.a. Portal gun. This means that you will have to use your brains, instead of your Brawn. Instead of rushing into a room or area, clearing out any enemies, rearm your weapons, rinse and repeat.

In this game, you might have to create a portal to transport yourself to the other end of the room, with the floor being replaced with water (which will kill you!), Grab the cube, go to the portal again, put the cube on top of the button, so on and so forth. The level layouts make this game absolutely perfect for a puzzle game, makes them with action/stealth elements to increase the intensity of the game.

In summary, Portal is an absolute classic, innovative, puzzle game. The game does not require a lot of horsepower installed in your PC to play (hell, even a Windows Vista computer will be able to run the game at 1080p, 60 frames per second. This game is also available as a part of the Orange box, which is backwards compatible on your Xbox one (including your series X) again, this game is a very good game to play after you had taken an epileptic seizure as the majority of the game is very laid back. The soundtrack is also very relaxing and melancholy. If you are looking for a puzzle game to play every once in a while and is on a tight budget, I seriously cannot recommend this game enough to you!

OVERALL SCORE 96.25%
