Review of Streets of Rage 4(PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch)

Hey everyone! This week, I review a game that has been 25 years in the making. (To put things into perspective, it took valve 9 years to develop their trademark class-based shooter, Team Fortress 2). Is this game worth the wait?

Let's find out!

(Best enjoyed with headphones on!)

In the 90s the Sega Mega Drive was the king of consoles. At those times, fighting games, for example, Street Fighter 2 was all the rage (pun intended!) Running on the heels of this trend was the brawler sub-genre. Examples of games belonging to the sub-genre are Nintendo's Double Dragon and SEGA's Streets of Rage.

The very first game of the series was released for the Mega Drive in 1991, Mr X and his criminal syndicate of crime have taken over the city. For former police officers, Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding and Adam Hunter fought their way through the city, filled with Mr X's henchmen and took down Mr X himself!

Fast forward to 1992 with streets of rage 2 again, for the Sega Mega Drive. Somehow, Mr.X survived the events of the first game. Mr X rebuilt the syndicate, as an act of revenge kidnapped Adam! Axel, Blaze, newcomers Max "Thunder" Hatchett, and Adam's little brother, Eddie "state" Hunter once again, fought their way through the city to Mr X's Island hideout, take down Mr X (for the second time) and rescue Adam.

The final stop of our little tour of the Streets of Rage franchise, before we get into the review itself is (surprise, surprise) Streets of Rage 3. Released in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive, Mr X has begun researching robotics to build an army of robots, these robots controlled by the syndicate replaces numerous important figures in the city's government.

When newcomer, Dr.Zan reveals the truth of the syndicate's plan to take down Adam and this crew, the syndicate strategically placed bombs and around the city to distract the police. And the end of the game, Axel's crew successfully defeats the robotic clone of Mr X.Mr X's robot factory is destroyed and Axel and his crew made it out alive, but they go their separate ways.

So, here We Are in 2020, 25 Years after the release of Streets of Rage 3, But in terms of timeline, this game is set a decade after the events of streets of rage 3. Mr X, head of the syndicate's children, the Y twins have created their own criminal empire and is now corrupting everything good in the city Therefore, breaking the decade-long peace. Former detectives Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, Adam Hunter's daughter, Cherry and apprentice of Dr.Zahn, Floyd Iraia team up against the Y syndicate on the... Streets of Rage.

Now onto the more serious business, the accessibility scores are as follows:

Visibility 8
Although you cannot customise the colour of your chosen characters clothing, you can unlock the classic sprites from the original 3 streets of rage games. There are no colour-coded elements that will cause issues for visually impaired players. Also, there are no customisation options in terms of font size in the menus.

Audibility 10
The starting cut scene has no spoken dialogue. This story of the game is told using a Star Wars Crawl-style format. So you should be able to play this game with no issues.

Mobility 11
In terms of the controls, the button layouts can be fully customised via the game's options menu. In the PC version, you can use your keyboard to play this game. The controls can be customised when using a keyboard. But it's not recommended! So this game is very easily playable for a mobility impaired player.

Gameplay 11

Right guys, remember how awesome Sonic Mania was? Multiply that by ten!

This game is yet another IP abandoned by a legendary developer/publisher in this case, SEGA took up by fan developers, in this case, Lizard Cube, Dotemu, the developers of the Xbox port of Final Fantasy VII and Guard Crush games.

They've taken was good about the franchise they are rebooting and cranked them by OVER 9000! (Yes, guys this is yet another Dragonball reference don't like it, sue me!).

This game retains the same 2D-style graphics Streets of Rage was famous for. this game went through  a total visual overall

They have replaced the backdrops and characters from simple sprites, due to the hardware limitations of the Mega Drive, with beautiful, smooth hand-drawn graphics.

in terms of the gameplay mechanics, the majority of them has been carried over from the classic Streets of Rage games, with the odd new feature, here and there to keep it relevant in today's market.

For example, online cooperative mode. Here you and up to 2 friends can team up against the game's campaign. To cater for people who prefer to take their fighting games more competitively (looking at you CRSnake!), there is a head-to-head battle mode where up to 4 players can beat each other to a pulp, in teams of 2, or free for all.

For the ultimate feeling of nostalgia, you can switch between the new, hand-drawn graphics and the classic Mega Drive era style sprites. You can switch between the new soundtrack and the classic game soundtrack done by the legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.

In summary, Streets of Rage 4 is the ultimate blend of classic brawler elements, dating back to the Mega Drive era, to more modern elements that you Would Expect in Games these days, For Example, as I have said above, Online Play.

If You Are Looking to Get Back into the Streets of Rage games, or a newcomer to the franchise I cannot recommend this game enough to you. With this game being on game pass, there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever to at least get this game a try. No, seriously guys quoting from Chancellor Palpatine, "do it!" You will not regret it!

OVERALL SCORE- 100%
